Long Story Short

Many of you have called or e-mailed in recent weeks, wondering when the Independent would publish its endorsements for the 2008 general election.

As promised, they're all here in this issue. We've packaged our views on most items you'll see on the ballot: individual contested races, county and city issues, state constitutional amendments and referendum proposals, plus area school districts' measures.

Also, in the middle of this issue, you'll find an eight-page insert paid for by Citizens Project, with its usual nonpartisan questionnaire on races and issues.

And for all you true political junkies out there, this does not mean we're finished covering the election by any means ...

We've got a couple news stories by Anthony Lane on voter registration and the congressional race. Rich Tosches writes about three military veterans and longtime Republicans now supporting Barack Obama, and in Between the Lines, I urge Gov. Bill Ritter to intervene and make sure this election is properly supervised at the state level.

We'll have more coverage in the next three weeks, realizing that many will wait to vote until either right before or on election day, Nov. 4.

Like you, we'll be glad when it's over. But we're not there yet.
