The mere fact that we use the word "respectable" in describing our 10 movie picks for the holidays says something about the state of the movie industry. It's rare to leave the theater dumbfounded and humbled, stuck in thought over a film. In some ways, we've all become a bit resigned to expecting little from a night at the movies.
Hence, respectable. Not "incredible" or "sure-to-please." Just the old stand-by, respectable.
We aren't so nave as to think we can live without that sweet escapism that movies provide us especially during turbulent holiday times. What with all those screwy work deadlines and turtleneck-heavy family get-togethers.
So there you have it, the rationale behind our movie preview this week. Mark your calendars or end up at Punisher: War Zone (notice not on our list), Transporter 3 (because, hey, two weren't enough) or Four Christmases (four? Hilarious!).
As for the rationale behind our biannual education guide, it goes as follows: Folks might want to know options for where to ship their kids for the day, or which college to start saving for, or where to return to school themselves.
After all, it's in the classroom where you learn how to use big words like "respectable."
