Long story short

From the minute I see him in his Navy working uniform, it's clear this guy is all business.

His workspace has only a few family pictures, no other personal memorabilia. In a word, it's shipshape. Like he arrived yesterday.

But don't let the tidiness fool you. Adm. James "Sandy" Winnefeld Jr., the recently chosen leader of Northern Command and the North American Aerospace Defense Command, has thrown himself into his new job (see interview here). He's already traveled the continent to fortify ties with Canada and Mexico and is studying the intricacies of both commands to recalibrate where necessary.

While fighter pilots are notoriously egotistical and bold, and anyone who's had a brush with Hollywood (as Winnefeld has) may crow a little, the admiral guards against hubris. His experience on that fateful Sept. 11, 2001 underscores the reality that, for him and other military leaders, there can be no arrogance, no rest.

For the next three years, Winnefeld, the second admiral to lead the Northern Command, will be called upon to combine his skills of courage in battle with the delicate dance of diplomacy, perhaps all while guiding the time-tested NORAD into new waters.

Anchors aweigh, Adm. Winnefeld. May you have fair winds and following seas in your command.
