Long story short

When Lady Gaga's new album Born This Way racked up more than a million first-week sales, I took a moment to send Indy writer Tom Lanham a congratulatory e-mail.

I'm pretty sure today's highest-profile pop icon could have done it without him, but I also think our faithful freelancer's 2008 Lady Gaga interview made the Indy look pretty good. (Unless you hate Gaga, in which case it probably had the opposite effect.)

Tom was one of the first journalists to interview the former Stefani Germanotta, back when her club hit "Let's Dance" still hadn't crossed over. In fact, her debut album hadn't yet been released in America.

All that changed quickly. The Fame came out here on Oct. 28, 2008, Tom's Indy interview was published Nov. 13, and the artist played Denver the following night — opening for New Kids on the Block, whom we somehow never got around to interviewing.

Since then, the Indy's managed to interview a few other major artists in their early day, including the Dead Weather and Janelle Monáe. This week, we check in with Fitz & the Tantrums (beginning here), who are currently blowing up all over the place and will play the Black Sheep this coming weekend.

F&TT will never be Gaga — none of us will — but they're an amazing live act. Hats off to the Black Sheep for being smart enough to book them. See you Saturday.
