Long story short

Rarely do we use this space for a public service announcement, but this week we're sending out a heads-up about a weird scam apparently being run in town.

The story comes to us courtesy of Spice Island Grill, whose (reportedly excellent) food we reviewed in the Appetite section of the Indy last week. That Oct. 13 issue, as you probably know, also contained 40-plus pages devoted to readers' picks in food, drink and nightlife in our Best Of Colorado Springs 2011 poll.

After the issue came out, one of Spice Island's co-owners received an e-mail from successplaques@yahoo.com. In it, Spice Island was invited to pay $139 for a mahogany-finished plaque commemorating the restaurant's inclusion in Best Of.

As of press time, we weren't sure if other businesses mentioned in last week's issue — whether as part of Best Of or, like Spice Island, in another part of the paper — had received similar e-mails. Regardless, we want to warn those businesses, and the ones included in this week's Best Of coverage (starting here) that someone falsely claiming to work with the Indy may be attempting to make some money off their success.

As a way to say congratulations, and to promote our readers' favorites, we have always provided framed certificates free of charge to first-, second- and third-place winners. That hasn't changed, and it won't be changing anytime soon.
