Long story short

Editor's note: We've updated this story to correct a detail about Langdon Foss. He has one daughter and one son. Our apologies for the error.

Back in January a co-worker told me about a talented, yet unknown, local comic book artist named Langdon Foss. Interest piqued — I am a bit of a comics geek, after all — I did a little research and found out that he was in the midst of a large project, illustrating television celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain's debut graphic novel.

The book wouldn't release until summer, and so the story sat on my to-do list for months, while other pieces took priority. When I finally had the chance to meet with Foss ("Bloody Good" begins here), I knew that there was something very special about this guy.

While interviewing celebs like Bourdain is a sweet perk to the reporting chunk of my job, one of my favorite parts is being able to introduce members of the Colorado Springs community to people they might not otherwise know are living among them.

Foss is one of those. He's a thoughtful, intelligent and big-hearted man who has been plugging along, hoping for a big break. The walls in his house feature the colorful and detailed Möbius-type art he produces in his down time — something that's limited with freelance work and two active little kiddos to keep up with.

If I could write the future, I'd craft him a hero's journey.

But of course, I can't. And actually, I don't think he'd want me to. After his best friend died a few years ago, he's discovered his own path.

"We're born anew with every breath," Foss says. "I want to live for who I am now."

  • If I could write the future, I'd craft him a hero's journey.
