Long Story Short

Author and photographer Eudora Welty once said, "A good snapshot stops a moment from running away."

Many of the moments of 2012, especially those connected to the Waldo Canyon Fire, aren't going anywhere. Those of us who lived through it can close our eyes and still see the orange-red shooting flames, the hovering pyrocumulus cloud, the rubble of the devastated homes.

Even so, the majority of the photos we received from the community for our 2012 Year in Pictures project were understandably related. And the images are big and bold and take us right back to those smoke-laden, fear-filled days (see feature here).

But as we dug a little deeper, we were reminded of other bits of 2012 too: USA Pro Cycling Challenge riders screaming at unbelievable speeds down Tejon Street with thousands watching; President Obama speaking at Colorado College as part of his re-election tour; costumed community members supporting local fundraisers.

The Indy's biz consists heavily of words. We've got reporters who spend their days researching and interviewing. Columnists who put their own touch on the issues at large. Editors who help with consistency and style. And you, our readers, who take what we do and share it. Words are important to our everyday lives.

But sometimes, all our roles aside, it truly is a picture that captures a little slice of life and says everything without saying anything at all.
