The buena onda -- literally translated as "good wave" -- hit U.S. and European shores just before the turn of the century, its crest steadily carrying Mexican film director Alejandro Gonzlez Irritu and his acting paisano Gael Garca Bernal.
Since then, both have risen to international fame, logging between them such indie favorites as Y Tu Mam Tambin, El Crimen del Padre Amaro and, perhaps the most-recognized, The Motorcycle Diaries.
2000's Amores Perros, on which both men worked, arguably was the inaugural film of this new "new wave" and therefore an appropriate kickoff for UCCS' Latin American Film Festival on Sept. 8.
The purpose of the series, according to organizers, "is to offer a look at some of the more pressing issues affecting [Latin America] today," as well as to "strengthen, through cultural activities and intellectual exchange, the relationship between the UCCS campus, its student population and the Colorado Springs community."
While most coverage of this cinematic phenom props Mexican and Brazilian contributions, the festival -- which is really more of a series of six films scattered through Nov. 17 -- dives deeper into the movement, boasting films from across the region. They include:
Ratas, Ratones, Rateras (Rodents), from Ecuador, on Sept. 22; Vendedora de Rosas (The Rose Vendor), from Colombia, on Oct. 6; Cidade de Deus (City of God), from Brazil, on Oct. 20; Cuidad de M (City of M), from Peru, on Nov. 3; and En la Puta Vida (Tricky Life), from Uruguay, on Nov. 17.
Each film will run from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the University Center Theatre, Room 302, on the UCCS campus. And each will be followed by a discussion led by Dr. Fernando Feliu-Moggi, assistant professor of Spanish.
