Metal/Hard Rock

Style of music, in 10 words or less: "Classic, old school metal delivered with modern aggression and precision"

Three artists they owe everything to: Slayer, Machine Head, Black Sabbath

Band members: Jon Saultz (guitar), Todd Morrison (drums), Brian Voorhies (bass), Chris Forsythe (vocals)

Debut performance: 2004

Recordings: Chasing Demons (2005), Funerals (2006), Monday (2011)

Why they matter: Frontman Chris Forsythe likes to think of Malakai as keepers of the old guard. After a decade together, the Springs' favorite death 'n' doom metal merchants consider 2014 to be a slow year, even though they're still averaging a couple gigs a month. Live shows will pick up after the band finishes recording its fourth release, currently slated for early next year. Malakai also did the music for recent indie film Project 5 — Forsythe has a cameo as "Guy Drinking in a Bar #1" — and earns steady airplay on KILO's Live and Local show.

2nd place: Inelements

3rd place: Sonic Vomit
