More moratoriums

Last week, the Manitou Springs City Council conducted its final vote on recreational marijuana, passing a moratorium until Dec. 31. "They haven't specified when or how they're going to revisit the issue," City Clerk Donna Kast told the Gazette. "They're giving it time for more examination." Legislators in Cañon City followed a similar path, instituting a moratorium on RMJ stores until April 1, 2014. "We have to make a decision by Oct. 1, so our decision was to wait until later to make the decision," KRDO quoted Mayor Tony Greer as saying. Either ordinance can be repealed prior to these dates.

The Tea-HC party

The debate over Proposition AA — the coming November question asking voters to approve new taxes on recreational marijuana — got off to a hot start Monday when detractors gave away free joints in Denver's Civic Center. "It is legal to hand out marijuana to people in Colorado and it is legal to do it without paying a penny in taxes," the Denver Post quoted prominent marijuana attorney, and rally organizer, Rob Corry as shouting to the crowd.

The ballot initiative will ask Coloradans to pass a 15-percent excise tax and a 10-percent sales tax on RMJ.

McCain on marijuana

According to a tweet from a covering journalist, U.S. Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., is coming around on cannabis. Tim Steller quoted McCain as saying, "Maybe we should legalize. We're certainly moving that way as far as marijuana is concerned."
