While Saturday night headliner Son Volt may be the big name on the bill, it really wouldn't be the MeadowGrass Festival without three days of distinguished musical talent on board. And this weekend's event is no exception.
In addition to Jay Farrar's celebrated Americana outfit, another main draw is Sunday night headliner Chubby Carrier & the Bayou Swamp Band. Louisiana's Grammy-winning Zydeco accordionist is no stranger to MeadowGrass fans, having blown away everyone with his performance at last year's festival.
Other touring artists in Sunday's lineup include eclectic western swingster Dan Hicks & the Hot Licks, whose classic "I Scare Myself" is as weirdly spooky as it was when he recorded it 40 years ago. The relatively unknown Barr Brothers — four talented musicians whose recent Late Show with David Letterman appearance incorporated bowed electrical guitar, classical harp and exquisite, singerly songwriting — might well be the best thing out of Montreal since Arcade Fire.
Other weekend highlights include Friday evening's appearance by Elizabeth Cook, whose recent Don Was-produced Welder album included guest performances by Dwight Yoakam and Rodney Crowell; Saturday's set by "Appalachian rock" outfit Big Daddy Love; and two appearances by Jake Schepps & the Expedition Quartet, who will play their own set on Friday and return Sunday for a "bluegrass mass" with the Colorado Springs Chorale's Chamber Singers.
Combine it all with some of the finest homegrown talent Colorado Springs has to offer, and this fourth annual MeadowGrass Festival could be the best yet. Here's this weekend's complete schedule:
