Memorial Day Commemoration

When: Mon., May 28, 9 a.m. 2012

It wasn't until after my great-grandfather died that I learned he had received two Purple Hearts, two Bronze Stars and a Silver Star for his service during World War II and the Korean War. Although he died a veteran, today is a time to honor those who didn't come back, which you can do by visiting Evergreen Cemetery (1005 S. Hancock Ave., tinyurl.com/memorialdaycommemoration), the site of today's Memorial Day Commemoration. Starting at 9 a.m., the cemetery's benevolent society will host a free family day (donations appreciated) with historical re-enactors, a balloon release at 1 p.m., and vets including a Tuskegee Airman as special guests. — Edie Adelstein
