Del Tha Funkee Homosapien headlines at 32 Bleu

Hip-hop innovator, guest MC extraordinaire, a music legend in the making: Del Tha Funkee Homosapien is all these things.

Truly, though, Del loves video games. It stands to reason, then, that he would headline the ESPN Videogames Cali Comm 2004 tour. The show takes place Thursday, Nov. 18, at 32 Bleu. Bring your dancing shoes, for it's going to be a big night, as the tour also features Aceyalone, Abstract Rude, and Micah 9, with guests Zion I and Bukue One.

Del emerged apart from the stereotypical West Coast gangsta scene as an artist well versed in both street smarts and fun, hip-hop dorkery. Discovered at 17 by his cousin, Ice Cube, Del began his own group, the Hieroglyphics. In 1991 he struck out on his own as a solo artist, releasing four albums and receiving much critical acclaim.

His intelligent lyrics and humorous wordplay are highlighted by his uniquely lyrical voice, often crafting songs that are ridiculously infectious. Del is an interesting dichotomy in his field. He is an MC that stands out in his own right, but still envies Icelandic chanteuse Bjrk for her creative freedom. Del has appeared on several artists' albums, from his appearance in Gorillaz as a big, fake cartoon drummer in the hit song "Clint Eastwood" to the looming "Magnetizing" by Handsome Boy Modeling School. In most cases, his tracks are often the album's highlight.

Come for the Del, stay for the rest of the amazing hip-hop artists. While fellow guest Abstract Rude works the soulful, mystical themes, Aceyalone, a founding member of the Freestyle Fellows, manages to mix success with a West Coast underground cult status. His debut album All Balls Don't Bounce was reissued this year, jazzed up with an extra CD of videos included.
