16 Blocks (PG-13)
Richard Donner knows how to craft this kind of movie in his sleep. It's solid, but unspectacular, and sometimes seems to be trying too hard. Scott Renshaw

*Inside Man (R)
Smooth Denzel Washingon faces off with hyper-cool Clive Owen in this Spike Lee Joint, a bank heist flick that's haphazardly structured but energized by Lee's visual verve. Terence Blanchard's mood-shifting soundtrack links organically to the on-screen action and Lee's lighting director paints the film determinedly urban and gritty. Although this is not typical Lee material, he manages to invest it with some from-the-hip social and racial commentary. Washington's performance, per usual, is wonderfully natural and mature. Kathryn Eastburn

*The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada (R)
Tommy Lee Jones' heart-wrenching testament to the value of human life grew out of ineffective and degrading geo-political border politics. There is a silent dignity in Jones' character, who moves and speaks deliberately, revealing his all-too-human side. Cole Haddon

Kimball's Twin Peak

*V For Vendetta (R)
Even in an era when the term "graphic novel" has given the comic book an air of legitimacy, you probably think you know what you're getting from a movie like V for Vendetta, which is based on an illustrated story. And you probably aren't expecting what may be the most politically subversive blockbuster ever created. Scott Renshaw
