Music on a Stick

The State Fair causes a musical windfall

What do Vince Neil, Engelbert Humperdinck and possibly demonic singing cows urging you to "moooove it right along" have in common? They're all part of this year's Colorado State Fair.

That's right. It's fair time again, time for canned okra and handmade quilts, food on a stick and the midway. But this year, it's also time to rock.

This year's fair offers an awesome lineup, ranging from classic country to boy bands. The two-week-long music spree begins when the fair opens this Saturday with Bob Dylan at the Events Center. Dylan isn't the only act able to claim Living Legend status: The legendary KC and the Sunshine Band is, in fact, still alive and kicking, as are the Beach Boys, Mel Tillis and Randy Travis. And every night, the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association riders will be able to lick their wounds to the sounds of country stars such as Terri Clark, Tracey Lawrence and Chris LeDoux. The Bud Tent features free music throughout the duration of the fair, and the AT&T Amphitheater is also free. But one of the coolest musical events won't be seen at any of the regular venues.

The Experience Red House Tour is basically a 53-foot trailer that can be parked and expanded. Inside, is a traveling Jimi Hendrix museum featuring the guitar god's instruments, records and artifacts, plus three audio/visual displays. Thank you, State Fair.

The biggest draw this year isn't the Hendrix museum, or the live acts, or even the possessed singing cows -- it's the ticket prices. The most expensive act is Brooks & Dunn ($30), but the majority of the concerts top out at $16 or $20. Some of the best are only $6.

There isn't enough room to list all of the events happening at this year's State Fair, but you can get daily schedules by clicking
