It’s the New Year and time to make some resolutions. We all make them, though, we rarely keep them despite our best intentions. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try, especially when it comes to outdoor recreation. If you’re looking for some resolutions for this year, you might want to give these a shot.

Be better prepared. Bring water, a flashlight and a map with you on the trail. Bring a whistle, food, first-aid kit, and a compass, too. Charge your cell phone, bring extra batteries — you get the picture.

Make better plans. Whether you've been planning a hike or ride for weeks or it’s spur of the moment, resolve to take the time to plan it out. What time is it? How long is the hike or ride — both in distance and time? What's the weather forecast? Do you know exactly where you’re going? Plan for everything you may encounter on the trail.

Get involved. Do you know that much of the trail building, maintenance and cleaning up of our parks and trails are done by volunteers? If you use the parks and trails, why not pitch in and help keep them nice? It's really easy to get started, almost every park has a “friends” group that organizes events and raise funds. Here's a list of them

Learn something new.
Whether it be a new trail, how to read a map or use a GPS or how to rock climb (safely), learn something new. This leads us to the next resolution.

Share what you know.  You probably have your favorite trail or your “secret” place. Or maybe you have a favorite piece of equipment, or some other nugget of useful information that makes your outing easier or more enjoyable. Make it point to share what you know with others. Everyone will be better for it and have more fun when you do.

Be a good ambassador. Set a good example for others. Stay on marked trails, obey parks and trail rules and, please, don’t litter.

Have some resolutions of your own? Share them on my Facebook page.

Happy (new) Trails in the New Year!
