'No soup for you!' yet

Culinary crumbs and gastronomic gossip

The highly anticipated Original SoupMan is finally opening at noon Monday, April 30, at 10 S. Tejon St. The franchise was started by legendary New York soup slinger Al Yeganeh, immortalized as the "Soup Nazi" character in a popular Seinfeld episode.

Local Hurricane Katrina evacuees Debra and David Canale are launching the business. The former artist and oil refinery worker, respectively, lost their St. Bernard Parish home and all their possessions in the August 2005 storm.

"We figured the only way to survive was to start our own business," says Debra, who scoped out the franchise opportunity in Manhattan in February 2006 and worked closely with the Colorado Springs Small Business Development Center to realize her vision. "We were looking for a niche, and we didn't see anything like this here."

Expect 50 rotating soups, including vegetarian and non-dairy options and of course, Yeganeh's famed lobster bisque and jambalaya.

Here's the beef

From smoked tea vinaigrette dressing under stained glass to curly fries under a ten-gallon cowboy hat: Sench ... uh ... Arby's is finally opening its new location on Saturday, April 21, at 331 S. Nevada Ave., a spot where fine dining had reigned for years as Sencha under Chef Brent Beavers.

Foodies lament. Horsey sauce lovers rejoice! Win $10,000, Sky Sox tickets and more throughout the day.

Black-and-white delight

Also cutting the proverbial ribbon on Saturday is a new Panda Express Gourmet Chinese Food, located at 2020 Southgate Road in the Broadmoor Towne Center. Again, expect promotional stunts and giveaways. Fifty percent of sales for the day will benefit Memorial Hospital for Children in partnership with The Children's Hospital in Denver.

Whole lotta love

Whole Foods Market (7635 N. Academy Blvd.) is hosting two noteworthy events this week. First, a 5% Community Day, on Thursday, April 19, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., in which 5 percent of total store sales will be donated to Friends of Cheyenne Caon. And second, an Eco-Friendly Food Fair, on April 21 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in which local food vendors will offer ways to reduce your carbon footprint. Call 531-9999 for more.
