Two years ago the Independent threw a birthday bash at the park surrounding the Pioneers' Museum, across the street from our then-brand new building to celebrate a decade of publishing.
Our 10th Birthday Bash was such a success that the Independent and our partnering organizations have turned the day into an annual event, a free celebration of culture and community. Hoopla 2005 takes place Saturday, Aug. 20 from 1 to 7 p.m., so make sure to mark your calendars now.
This year's Hoopla will include live local blues and folk music, and a beer garden organized by Bristol Brewery. Elope Hats' Kids Kalliope will feature attractions ranging from Jim Jackson's clowning to a live alligator, plus lots of interactive art and games. Food vendors, art booths and 30 nonprofit groups also will be there. Admission is free all day at the Pioneers' Museum, with exhibits currently including a collection of American Indian baskets from across the United States.
All proceeds from the Bristol Beer Garden will go to the Independence Community Fund, the Independent's charitable arm. And if you buy an Elope hat, all proceeds will go to Compassion for Kids, a local nonprofit that helps kids battling cancer.
Looking forward to seeing you on the 20th.
