When the Indy asked Floyd Frame for an interview, he replied, "What do you want with me? I'm an old man!"
Old and interesting. Frame has been in Colorado Springs since 1930 and now directs the community concert band, jazz ensemble and the Midland Brass Band. Almost any Springs local over 60 has seen him playing or directing at weddings, school dances and community events over the years. He's had his feet on almost every long-standing stage in the Springs, and that's something.
Frame attended Colorado Springs High School and was tooting his trumpet professionally at age 16. Upon graduating, he performed with the Broadmoor Tavern house band for several years and then formed the Floyd Frame Orchestra in 1948. He graduated from Colorado College and taught music in District 2 for 41 years after that.
He inherited the Colorado Springs Concert Band in the early '80s, kicked off its first outdoor concert series, and then added the jazz ensemble a few years later. After that, he formed the Midland Brass Band, named after the original Colorado Midland Band (which was sponsored by the Midland Railroad at the turn of the last century). He says the name is a nod to the memory of his childhood music teacher, Burke Kibler, who had played with the original band.
The community concert and jazz bands perform for free at senior centers during the winter and finish the season with the outdoor park concerts. Floyd says that the bands meld business people and students, the young and the old, the experienced, the green and the (sometimes) rusty. The oldest member of the concert band is 83; the youngest is a seventh-grader.
