The man behind the mural

Unless you happened to be awake and downtown between the hours of 2 and 5 in the morning this past month, you probably didn't catch mural artist Kim Polomka at work. Rather than face parking issues, weather and other factors, the Australia native opted to work mostly under the stars up on his ladder and hanging over roof's edge.

The unique nocturnal experience has left the animated artist with more than one good story to tell. (Has anyone else seen one of those odd parked cars that rocks back and forth?)

In honor of Mozart's 250th birthday, a local nonprofit group and Wells Fargo Private Client Services commissioned Polomka to paint a mural on the east face of the In Sight Optical building at 12 E. Pikes Peak Ave.

"I wanted to make it easy to identify," he says, alluding to Mozart's face. "I think we need to show our visitors that we are culturally hip."

It's the second of the artist's murals to grace downtown; a mural honoring our sister city in Mexico, Nuevo Casas Grandes, colors the north side of the World Savings Building just a block away.

The artist also has paid tribute to the great composer with "Moozart," one of his three entries into the charitable Denver Cow Parade, which runs from July 22 through Oct. 20.

"Where I come from, Mozart is a second language," Polomka says.

Visit kimpolomka.com to view Moozart and many of the artist's other works.
