Dawn Dawson is freaking pumped.
As we talk, the Colorado Springs resident is just days away from leaving the country to announce for the 2007 New Zealand Jet Sport Nationals. Meanwhile, back in Colorado, it's clear that we'll get near a running jet ski only if we know someone with a large indoor pool.
"The reason I do the announcing is that I get juiced up to be able to offer something," Dawson says. "It's a way for me to pay it back."
Dawson, who moved to Colorado from Texas more than 20 years ago, has raced jet skis for the past 14 years. And she looks to stay involved in the tight, competitive community any way she can. So if she's not going handlebar-to-handlebar on the water, she'll bring the racers' excitement to the audience, as she has for the past six years.
"That kind of drama has always drawn me," says Dawson, whose day job is running the Springs-based Reflections Advertising. "I try to give it from the perspective of the rider. I'm announcing what it's like to have the helmet on."
And as someone who's won a jet ski world title herself, Dawson knows exactly how to capture the moment.
"You don't control your environment you control you in that environment," she says. "You never know when you're going to be upside-down."
