PPRM 'calling every single patient'

Planned Parenthood of the Rocky Mountains will make special arrangements with clients for services pending the reconstruction of its damaged building in Colorado Springs, an agency official said Monday.

"We are calling every single patient and helping them make a plan," said Vicki Cowart, CEO and president of PPRM, in an email. She did not elaborate.

But she said all 19 of its other health centers are open and treating patients. "We are adding additional appointments for Colorado Springs patients at our nearby sites," she said. "We are working hard to accommodate everyone who needs us."

Asked how the design of the Springs facility worked for or against rescuers during the shooting, Cowart said Planned Parenthood "has strong security measures in place," but didn't detail what those are.

The building on Centennial Boulevard was remodeled before the agency relocated there in mid-2010.

"Every time we build out a new site we take into consideration the best practices in technology and infrastructure available so that we can provide a safe and welcoming environment for patients and staff," she said.

"These procedures and infrastructure resulted in saving many lives."

Like other Planned Parenthood clinics across the country, she noted, the Springs site has seen "an alarming increase in hateful rhetoric and smear campaigns against abortion providers and patients over the last few months, and that environment breeds acts of violence."

The clinic serves more than 8,000 patients a year at the Springs office and provides a range of care, including cancer screenings, birth control counseling, STD testing and abortion care.
