W.C. Handy Awardwinning blues artist Andrew "Jr. Boy" Jones stops in town before heading down to the Trinidaddio Blues Fest for a performance at Beside the Peak -- a benefit concert for the Ralph and Chandler Bruning Foundation.

Ralph and Chandler both raced stock cars up the Peak under the number "23," with Ralph becoming the Pikes Peak Hill Climb's winningest driver in that division. The Brunings also worked at Bristol Brewing Company, son Chandler as the head brewer and father Ralph as the assistant.

Ralph lost his fight with cancer in 2000. Chandler Bruning was killed last year when he lost control of his car on the Pikes Peak Highway during qualifying runs for the race. Now, the Brunings' friends and family have chosen to celebrate and commemorate their lives by creating the new foundation, which awards scholarship in music, brewing and culinary arts.

Money will be raised for the scholarships at the concert and live auction Friday night at Phantom Canyon downtown. Headlined by guitarist and singer Jr. Boy, who performed with Freddie King and Charlie Musselwhite before beginning a solo career, the concert also features the cream of the Colorado Springs blues and jazz scene.

Johnny & the Jukes, Magic Dave & the New Mules and Brenda Miles will be joined by Alan Joseph, Joe Jaquez, John Stone and many other local singers and musicians from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m., with a live auction at 8.

Tickets are $10. Call 633-2555.
