Playing Around: Big Back Yard

By day, they're just happy-go-lucky dudes doing the work thing, trying to earn a living like the rest of us. Come the off-hours though, Dave, Ivor, Mike and Jerry are Big Back Yard, a band that needs little introduction for those tuned into the local music scene. For those lagging a bit behind, Big Back Yard is, and has been, a staple of the local scene since their inception eight years ago. They are truly one of Colorado Springs' premiere bands, which has nurtured, faithfully supported and sustained our burgeoning live music scene.

All of that hard work has recently paid off. A few months back, they garnered third place in the Best Band in Colorado show, a contest that showcases the best live bands throughout the state. Quite a feat and an honor, but not a surprise. These guys are tight, practiced and professional. But most of all, they're incredibly energetic and always have a great time on stage -- infectious traits.

Their style is a blend of surf, sometimes straight-on rock and occasionally alternative, and is always ass shakin' and full of "tasty tuneage and rippin' groovage," as the band likes to say. But don't just take their word, my word or even the word of those judges who doled out third. Check them out for yourselves Friday in Acacia Park, beginning at 6:30. BBY together with another local staple, One Man Gone, will be having an anniversary celebration/concert commemorating their eight years of playing local music. And in the true spirit of live music and community building, the event is free. Plus, a trip to Acacia Park means a visit to Uncle Wilber... a warm summer night, live music and a big fountain in which to dip you feet. It just doesn't get any sweeter.
