Listening to vocalist and guitarist John-Alex Mason and harmonica player Gerry Hundt, it's surprising to realize that these deep, old Southern sounds are coming from two young white guys, one from northern Illinois, and one from right here in River City.
Mason, a native of Colorado Springs, has been bumming around the country for the past few months, playing blues clubs up and down the New England coast. Before that, Mason honed his craft as a street musician in Europe, but now he has come home to Colorado, settled in Golden and begun a home-state mini-tour with Hundt.
Hundt's lowdown and vintage harp playing is the perfect complement to Mason's gritty voice and resonating strings. Both artists are heavily influenced by the sun-beaten blues of legends like Robert Johnson and Lightnin' Hopkins and the more modern sounds of Greg Brown and James Mathus. Regardless of associations, it's hot Delta blues, through and through.
Hundt and Mason perform up at Tres Hombres this Friday. Call 687-0625 for details.
This show at Stargazers with the Charlie Milo Trio will be broadcast live on local…
