The unbearable, oppressive heat of this curious summer is soon to pass, leaving in its wake several cases of ring-around-the-collar, heightened sales of underarm deodorant, and, of course, the misty watercolor memories of the plentiful free music we were privy to in Our Fair Burg's public parks and bandstands. One of the series still ongoing is Gettin' Down Downtown, on the courtyard behind the Plaza of the Rockies, 121 S. Tejon St.
While rooted in jazz acts, the concerts feature a variety of styles and genres. This week is the jazzy Windy Fopiano Duo, next week is oldies and doo-wop band The Nostalgics (pictured above). On Sept. 4, Joe Uveges goes all VH1 Storytellers on his acoustic guitar. Sept. 11 is a mini Hot Club hoedown with Mango fan Django's gypsy jazz. The series concludes on Sept. 18 with the Pearl Street Band.
The outdoor concerts take place every Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. Bring lawn chairs to plop on the grass. For details, call 785-3235.
