Playing Around: Hash Brown

For the past 24 years, Hash Brown, a.k.a. Brian Calway, has been blending his knowledge of Muddy Waters-style Chicago blues with the jump and swing of T-Bone Walker and Johnny Moore.

After moving from the East Coast to Dallas in 1983, Hash began exploring the Texas blues of greats like Clarence Gatemouth Brown and Goree Carter. The result is a musical melting pot of ability and methods that has enabled him to play with a diverse group of bluesfolk.

According to Brown, the list of musicians he has played with could fill "the phone book of a mid-sized county capital." Some of those names are Paul Butterfield, Sugar Ray, Koko Taylor, Dr. John, James Cotton and Duke Robillard.

While playing guitar in the ZuZu Bollin Band, Hash decided to ask his phone-book-sized group of friends from the Texas blues scene to help him create the album T Is for Texas. The recording features a regular mlange of talent, from Sam Myers singing and playing harp on four tracks to Darrell Nulisch singing on two. T for Texas also features the last recording made by ZuZu Bollin before he passed away.

Hash Brown will be playing his special recipe of blues at Jos's Thursday night at 9 p.m. with the New Mules. Call 636-2311 for info.
