Playing Around: Kenny Wayne Shepherd

To give you a sense of how young bluesman Kenny Wayne Shepherd is, the moment he decided he wanted to be a musician he was seven years old, standing on top of an amp case at a concert his father had brought him to, watching Stevie Ray Vaughn perform.

After returning from the awe-stricken zone of Stevie Ray worship, Shepherd got himself a guitar and began to learn how to play, and by age 13 he had received a standing ovation after an impromptu performance in a New Orleans blues club during a family vacation. Soon the young guitarist found himself on the road, opening for Bob Dylan and the Eagles. After adding Noah Hunt, Sam Bryant and Keith Christopher to the band, Shepherd and his cohorts rose to the top of the blues heap, scoring a number 1 hit on the Billboard blues charts and touring with the Rolling Stones.

Now barely into his 20s, the guitarist has made three albums, and caught the attention of such major players as Dr. John, James Cotton, Les Claypool of Primus and members of the Allman Brothers band and Stevie Ray's band, Double Trouble. Each of these musicians has appeared on Live On, Shepherd's latest release. The album is another collection of Shepherd's innovative interpretation of lowdown blues styles, from Delta to Chicago.

Shepherd will play the Colorado Music Hall Wednesday night. Tickets are $22.50. Call 447-9797.
