Playing Around: Looks Like Me

They're good enough, they're smart enough, and gosh darnit, people like them. People 'round these parts like them enough to have voted them "Best Local Band" in the recent Independent Best of the Springs Readers Poll.

Modern alternarockers Looks Like Me have also come away with the title "Best Band in Southern Colorado" after winning the 1999 KILO 94.3 Battle of the Bands contest, and LLM were finalists for the top band in the Western region in the 1998 Hyundai/Entertainment Weekly online regional poll.

Early last year, local musicians Lance May, Brian McClure and Paul Oldfield decided to start a band of their own. They had worked together in other projects and knew each other well, so after guitarist Quinton Montgomery joined up, Looks Like Me was complete. The band worked quickly, polishing their modern-rock sound and live-performance antics. By December of 1998, the band had released a six-song demo CD, which set sales records -- over 100 discs per hour -- at a local Sam Goody store.

However, the quick local success hasn't brought just roses and sunshine to the band. Looks Like Me is often criticized for the obvious influences of Live, Pearl Jam and other alternative bands receiving heavy spin on commercial mediums. They've been called "radio rock," an accusation they don't deny. "What's wrong with [radio rock]? LLM basically prefers to play whatever it feels, without labels or titles," according to the band's Web site.

No matter what the critics have to say, Looks Like Me aren't musical plagiarists. Every intensely emotional song on their sophomore release Evolution is original, written by members of the band. Evolution will be released Saturday, Nov. 27, with a celebration at the Colorado Music Hall. Martyrs and Poets will also play the all-ages show. Tickets are $3-$5, subject to service charges.
