Playing Around: Lucky LaRue

Colorado Springs native Lorelei is multi-talented. Besides playing the piano and organ, she's also a classically-trained master of the violin. A Colorado Fiddle Champion, she toured Europe with the Pueblo Symphony before meeting Al in 1986. Al had traveled far from his Louisiana home, where he began playing the blues as a young teen in New Orleans, his musical style steeped in Delta style. Together Al and Lorelei spent 12 years touring the United States, playing country in Nashville, big band music in Nevada and everything else in between. Now they've come back home and planted roots, teaching at the Lil' House of Music in Fountain. While musical instruction keeps Al and Lorelei busy during the day, at night they let loose and become Lucky LaRue, a blues group that sometimes plays with other musicians, sometimes strictly as a duo.

Which is a fine combination, as Al's blues harmonica and Stevie Ray-style guitar perfectly balance Lorelei's blues fiddle. Taking her cue from Howard Armstrong and Lionel Young, Lorelei's years of violin training have given her the skills needed to take on the work of other bluesmen like B.B. King, Muddy Waters and fellow fiddler Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown. A set by Lucky LaRue may also include songs by Johnny Winter (no small feat for a guitarist), the Allman Brothers, the Dave Matthews Band, and, every now and then, a screaming bluegrass number.

The duo will be performing up the pass at the Pine Gables Tavern in Green Mountain Falls Friday and Saturday night. For more info, call 684-2555
