Playing Around: Phillip Walker

If you don't have the blues, don't worry. You can get more than a manly man's helping of them this weekend in Canon City. First up, Phillip Walker (pictured here), who has played with everyone from Etta James to T Bone Walker and Little Richard, will get down at the Annex Ballroom Friday night. That same evening, a hop, skip and a jump away, the third annual Belvedere Blues Festival in the tent behind Merlino's Belvedere Restaurant kicks off. Included on this bill of all-stars will be Buddy Whittington, lead for John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers; local virtuoso Smokin' Joe and his Mighty Burners with the diva of fever Joanne Taylor; Tiny Barge and The Big Chill; and many more. Don't get too many blues here, though. The whole thing's a benefit for Orchard of Hope Foundation and there'll be a motorcycle rally with a ride over the Royal Gorge Bridge and the always-nerve-wracking "Skyline Drive." Tickets to Phillip Walker are $10; call 719/276-3088. Tickets to the blues fest are $15 for Friday or Saturday, $12 for Sunday, or $32 for a weekend pass. Call 719/275-5558 or visit www.orchardofhope.com/html/blues_fest.html for more.
