Playing Around: Sub Standard

Unless you've been living in a box for the past year or so, you're probably already hip to the fact that Genghis Kahn has become the premier jazz club for at least a 65-mile radius.

At least five nights a week the subterranean restaurant and bar serves swank Asian cuisine and a collection of contemporary, fusion and traditional jazz bands, with the occasional rhythm and blues group shaking things up.

Of the many musicians that play jazz jam hopscotch on the Genghis stage, the members of Sub Standard are some of the most respected.

Guitarist and composer Alan Joseph has been performing with the greats for over 30 years, and drummer Mike Marlier composes commercial music in addition to his serious projects with Dotsero and the Neophonic Jazz Orchestra. Both are professors at the University of Denver Lamont School of Music. Pat Bianchi, the third angle of the Sub Standard triangle, provides groove action with the Hammond B-3 organ.

Unfortunately for us, Bianchi is plotting a move to New York. There's only a handful of great keyboardists in this town, so make sure to catch this one before he leaves us alone and sad. Sub Standard performs Wednesday night in Genghis Kahn's plum-hued confines. Call 328-1582 for details.
