Playing Around: Tab Benoit

From the looks of Tab Benoit's tour itinerary, he likes playing Colorado just as much as we in Colorado like to hear him perform. The blues guitarist will kick off his eight-stop mini-tour through the Centennial State this evening, bringing his very own style of Cajun-tinged blues to the Colorado Music Hall.

Heavily influenced by such guitar greats as B.B. King, John Lee Hooker and Albert Collins, Benoit, who grew up in Houma, La., never even heard the blues until he was in high school. He got his first guitar at age 9, and cut his teeth strumming basic chords to traditional Cajun waltzes and two-step tunes. He played at local church fairs and on the local country radio station, but wasn't happy just strumming basic rhythm chords. That musical unrest continued into high school until he was accidentally introduced to the music of B.B. King. Knowing that he had found his calling, Benoit jumped headfirst into the blues and took along his Cajun influences. The result was the birth of his unique sound.

Touring in support of his latest CD, These Blues Are All Mine, Benoit will bring his Cajun blues to the stage this evening at 9. Also on the bill for tonight's show are locals Rikki Dee Hall and the Voodoo Hawks. Tickets are $12 (tickets subject to a service charge). Call 447-9797 for tickets or more information.
