Playing Around: The Color Red

Instead of milk and cookies, Billy Meyer came home from school to a living room in which the furniture had been replaced with a drum kit and amps. Meyer's father would teach young Billy and his friends how to read, write and play music until he had to leave to work a night job. Jon Zamora didn't have the same level of musical equipment available to him as a boy, so he made do playing air guitar on a tennis racquet.

Years later, Zamora gave up the guitar-playing to his older brother Marc, for whom the bass is weapon of choice. Along with drummer Bill Larkin, Meyer was drawn to playing music with the Zamora brothers, and soon the Color Red was born.

Through another California band, KenoChamp, the band was hooked up with SpinRecords.com, a new form of record label. Internet-based Spin focuses on grooming bands for the "majors" -- big labels like Columbia and Arista -- by heavy promotion and constant contact, Web and otherwise.

After releasing one EP, the Color Red added guitarist Adrian Verloop to the band. Together with engineer and producer Rich Mouser, who previously worked with Weezer and Bare Naked Ladies, they've recorded their latest album, Attention Whore..

Somewhere between Frank Black, Jeff Buckley, the Pixies and the Foo Fighters, the Color Red is clearly mainlining alternative rock. The band will be playing an all-ages show Saturday night with local bands Soul Lament and 1999 Readers' Poll choice Looks Like Me. Tickets are $3 to $5; call 447-9797.
