Playing Around: The Sprague Brothers

It's not often that you get to check out new musical offerings before they take the stage at your local club, but you'll get a chance this week with the Sprague Brothers. The two will exhibit their instrumental goods while their images shimmy into your TV set prior to their gig at Jack Quinn's on Tuesday. KKTV's News at Noon show will play host to the throwback duo, whose raucous honky-tonk-surf-R&B-pop-rock brings to mind another couple of related string pickers, the Everly Brothers.

The producers of the show booked Frank and Chris Sprague after hearing their latest release, Let the Chicks Fall Where They May. The album is rooted in the rockabilly of Buddy Holly (who the brothers claim to be distantly related to) but ventures into other musical regions, such as Great Britain-style '60s-era pop, early Texas rock, and West Coast surf and swing. The Sprague kids' first influence, however, was their father, a trumpet player who encouraged Frank to begin strumming a guitar at age 5, and, a few years later, willingly accepted his younger son Chris' choice of a drum set.

The rambunctious and upbeat performers will appear on the Tuesday news show at noon on local channel 11, and if you like what you see, you can catch them live onstage at Jack Quinn's at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $3. Call 385-0766 to find out more.
