Playing Around: Unfocused Family

They don't play Celtic music. They will not play the Dead. They are not a blues band (thank God). What then, you might ask, is the point of local band Unfocused Family? They don't seem to fit into any of Colorado Springs' normal live music modes, they have quite the attitude and they don't plan on conforming anytime soon.

Well, there you go. Unfocused Family play music because they have a good time doing it. They're not looking to express their angst, or man the front of a new music revolution, and while they might not mind being disgustingly rich, their success does not rest on occupying MTV's most wanted list.

The Family was born of an impromptu idea two years ago when local musicians Carolyn "Oral" Roberts and Marc and Cheryl Faye Bakker were asked to perform at PrideFest. The appreciative applause of the crowd stroked their egos in such an effective way, the band decided to stay together and play the occasional local gig. The addition of bassist Johnny Swaggart and drummer Mike Falwell made the family whole and ready to perform their impressive sets of cover tunes from the '60s, '70s, '80s, and '90s. Now, don't think cover band as in played-your-sister's-wedding/ couldn't-make-it-in-a-hotel-lounge cover band -- the Family actually rocks.

According to them, the pure light of truth shines down upon the band, highlighting their kinetic energy and love of music. They'll be spreading the word and joy of rock 'n' roll to the masses on Saturday night at a benefit for the Pikes Peak Gay and Lesbian Community Center. Admission is $4. Call 632-4393.
