Yet another blues legend has taken up shack in Colorado Springs. As we've pointed out in other Playing Around features, the status of "legend" in blues culture is not something to be taken lightly. Nor is it something that is self-proclaimed. "Legend" is an anointed status, not entirely unlike knighthood (except usually with more leather and/or flat cowboy hats with silver conch bands, and sometimes suspenders), which is bestowed by those upon whom the status has also been bestowed. It's unclear who acquired the original "blues legend" status, or how he got it, or if there are secret ceremonies, but one thing is clear: Detroit Frank DuMont is a bona fide slide guitar legend. A self-made man from the streets of Detroit (not unlike Eminem), Detroit Frank went on to play with the likes of John Lee Hooker, Bo Diddley, Ron Wood (of the Rolling Stones), Rob Tyner (of the MC5), James Cotton, Albert King, Buddy Miles and Bernard Allison. He's playing Friday night at the Crystola Bar and Grill in Crystola, but look for him throughout the Pikes Peak region in the near future.
