The Nocturnal Tomatoes are one of those dogged local outfits that just keeps on rockin' for the love of rock. At least Craig Tomanini, the band's founder and only original member, believes so heartily in his nightshade vegetable name that he's gotta keep rockin' under that moniker. Either way, The Nocturnal Tomatoes appear to be here to stay. Now composed of Tomanini on drums and vocals, Johnny Nelson on lead guitar and vocal, Matt Martinez on the keys and Chuck "Groovy" Grewe on bass, The 'Maters are defying the haters with the release of their latest record, An American Rock Band. The album, a five-song miniature rock opera about -- what else? -- rock and the trappings of its lifestyle, has an earnest spirit and a heavy rock and blues sound kindred to The Allman Brothers and Skynyrd. Word has it that their light show and danceable, lick-driven songs are unlike anything else on the Colorado Springs circuit. You can catch them at the Hogan again on July 8 if you miss them this time.
