Ashley Raines Phantom Canyon Brewing Company, 2 E. Pikes Peak Ave., 635-2800 Sunday, Feb. 12, 4-7 p.m. no cover.

The first time I saw Ashley Raines, he was playing guitar outside of a Starbucks, singing, "I might be broke." My first thought was, "Well, no shit. You're a street musician." Indeed, Raines is a wandering soul, dirt under his fingernails, who plays rock music. He says he's learned from his travels, but, like every artist, is vulnerable. And his music betrays that vulnerability more than he may realize. That's OK, because Raines does seem to realize what it means to be an artist: to embrace and experience life, and to share it with others. His music has the weight of rock, the soul of funk and the lyricism of a true poet. Formerly an incessantly touring label artist, he's in town for an extended visit, bringing his storytelling to Phantom every Sunday through March 5.
