Basil Reid UCCS Pub & Game Room, University Center, 1420 Austin Bluffs Pkwy. Thursday, Feb. 16, noon to 2 p.m. no cover; call 262-3260 for info.
Basil Reid is one of those familiar local music mainstays, like Arch Hooks, Head Full of Zombies and John Stone. He's been around since the '80s (moving here from Jamaica to train for the Olympics in table tennis) and has been jammin' ever since. Dedicated to traditional reggae sounds, he records his music in Jamaica. He's also known for hosting a grand Bob Marley Birthday Bash at Jose Muldoon's every year.
His latest album, Prayers, reflects his roots, with funky reggae beats and repetitive verses. "The Beer Song" stands out, pleasing the crowds with lyrics like, "In heaven there is no beer / that's why we got to drink it down here."
This week, Reid brings his tunes to UCCS, where, according to activities coordinator Daryl Miller, he's very popular with the students. The concert is part of a promotion for Cricket Communications, a new wireless provider, and there'll be free pizza, as well.
