The Appleseed Cast with Amber Pacific and Lorito Opens His Beak The Black Sheep, 2106 E. Platte Ave. Sunday, Feb. 26, 8:30 p.m. All ages, $8; visit ticketweb.com.

With tracks titled "Woodland Hunter," "Silas' Knife" and "The Clock and the Storm," The Appleseed Cast might be pegged as cloak-wearing "Dungeons & Dragons" players.

They're not.

Their latest album, Peregrine, set to release March 21 on Militia Group, is laden with atmospheric sound, combining traditional rock with emo and shoegazer heaviness. Lackadaisical melodies like "Here We Are (Family in the Hallways)" contrast with pleasant electro buzzings in "Mountain Halo." Produced by John Congleton (The Roots, Modest Mouse), the lush and layered Peregrine swells and nearly bursts.

The Lawrence, Kan., quintet came together in 1998, and their early experiments earned them comparisons to Radiohead, mid-'90s Sunny Day Real Estate and Planes Mistaken for Stars.

For the recording of Peregrine, founding members Chris Crisci (vocals/guitar), Aaron Pillar (guitar) and Marc Young (bass) added drummer Nathan Richardson (formerly of The Casket Lottery). Check out myspace.com/theappleseedcast to hear tracks both old and new. Better yet, go see them work their warlock-music magic live at The Black Sheep, with pop-punksters Amber Pacific and locals Lorito Opens His Beak.
