Hieroglyphics with Black Pegasus and Archetypes The Black Sheep, 2106 E. Platte Ave. Thursday, March 23, 8 p.m. $15, all ages; all 866/468-7621 or visit ticketweb.com for more.

Hieroglyphics are one of those hip-hop collectives that seem to ebb and flow with the years, members coming and going based on time available and solo CD sales. The Oakland, Calif.-based group started over a decade ago as a vehicle for the founders, including loopy lyricist Del tha Funkee Homosapien, to fulfill their shared vision of wrapping thoughtful, intelligent lyrics around strong, creative beats. Eventually, they formed their own record label, Hieroglyphics Imperium, to gain creative control.

After a couple critically acclaimed albums, including 2003's Full Circle, Hieroglyphics meandered on their separate paths. The members have been recording their own solo work, but re-congregating for regular tours. That they've never hit the mainstream certainly doesn't matter to their hordes of devoted fans. At the Black Sheep show, the 'Glyphs will include Souls of Mischief, a quartet that sound like De La Soul gone hardcore; Pep Love, who's the looked-over Jan Brady of the group; producer Domino, and Casual. While all the guys are talented MCs, go to the show to catch Casual, whose energetic and funky solo CD, Fear Itself, is ridiculously infectious.
