Saxophonist Wayne Hoey isn't nave when it comes to his jazz band, All that Jazz.

"When you get to our age and our situation, you get selective about where you play," he says, perhaps nostalgically. "We're not going to just play some bar for 40 bucks."

Hoey and his bandmates, guitarist Barbara Ernst and upright bassist John Flores (both of whom also perform with another local band, Mistura Bela), have reached middle age. And so has their audience, given the trio's tendency to line up dinnertime gigs at local restaurants.

Not surprisingly, it all has quite the effect on their set lists.

"We're not going to play the avant-garde stuff," he says. "We're not going to play the wild Miles Davis stuff."

Instead, All that Jazz mostly plays audience requests. More often than not, Hoey says, this means Frank Sinatra, Michael Buble and "the old standards."

"It's the stuff people like to listen to," he says.

And that's fine with Hoey even if it means sometimes holding back his group's collective talent.

"We're in the music business," Hoey says. "We play what's marketable."
