Nancy Norman's answering machine is, she admits, a little odd: "You've reached the home of the Storys!" her recorded voice says with gusto. Then, after a moment's pause, it continues: "... and Nancy Norman, psychotherapist ..."

Freud would have a field day with this one. Or, Norman says, maybe not. As bizarre as her outgoing message sounds, there's no doubt that music can be therapeutic. It certainly has been for her.

Four years ago, shortly after losing her husband, Norman found herself being serenaded by Bill Duryea and his guitar. His performance inspired her to take up the instrument as well.

And so goes the "once upon a time" that began the Old Colorado City-based group, The Storys. Today, Duryea and Norman together aim, with every song, to have an effect on their listeners.

"The music we play is magic," Norman says. "It moves people."

The music moved Norman and Duryea, himself a divorc, through their tough times. And Norman (or, at least, the psychotherapist in her) enjoys the healing aspect of her band best.

"In a way, I feel like I'm reaching more people than I've been able to with my practice," she says.
