Primary colors

Primary colors The political scene is heating up, battle lines are drawn. One way or another, most people were abuzz last week about the Democratic Convention and John Kerry's acceptance speech. Depending on whom you talk to or which pundit you listen to, it was too liberal, too scripted and cautious or absolutely fabulous. And with some momentous primary races to be decided next Tuesday, Aug. 10, even the Republicans are at each other's throats with nasty attack ads.

I - thought the rest of the convention was fantastic, and - everyone spoke to the problems of the Democratic Party, - but not Kerry. He didn't live up to my expectations. - - Are you voting in next week's primary? I've - been coming to Colorado Springs every year since 1988 - to run in the Pikes Peak Marathon. I'm 88 years old and I - train on the mountain seven days a week. I'd vote for - Mike Miles if I could, but I'm not registered to vote here. - - Have any political ads caught your attention? I - despise Bush's commercials and I don't think much of - Kerry's. Basically, they all suck.

I long ago - decided that I'll vote for any halfway decent candidate - running against Bush, and Kerry is a lot better than Bush. - - Are you voting in the primaries next week? I've - lived here two years, and last year I didn't know enough - about local politics to vote. This year I know a little - more, so I'll vote this time. - - Is there a race or issue particularly important to you? - I think the teachers deserve to have their union. - They need someone in their corner. They're traditionally - poorly paid, and they have one of the most important - jobs. They need better pay. - - Are the political ads on television getting a response - out of you? I don't like negative politics. Instead of - bashing each other, I wish they'd talk about the issues - and what they can do.

You're not going to learn anything - about the issues from a TV ad.
