Many areas in town could use some work. But where do we start, and how can we preserve the local history and character while we do it?
Kayla Williams of the south side works in retail.
Describe an area of town that could use a makeover. Murray Boulevard, that whole stretch between Fountain [Boulevard] and Galley [Road]. I used to live there, and a lot of the apartments aren't kept up at all.
What would you like to see happen there? Clean it up and make it better. It's a convenient area because everything is close by, and it could be a decent place to live.
Is there anywhere in Colorado Springs that you feel unsafe? Yes, that same area I mentioned. There's a lot of crime.
What's one area you wish could return to the way it used to be? There used to be a lot of places where you could take your kids that were affordable. Now, not so much. Kids need places where they can be safe and have fun.
Dan Reich of the southwest side is a salad dressing producer.
Do you think the area between Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs needs a makeover? No, because to me it's nostalgic. I grew up here, and not a lot has changed in that area. I worked summers at the Garden of the Gods Campground.
Is there anywhere locally that you feel unsafe? No, I've spent time in Detroit and other places, so in a relative sense I feel very safe here.
What's the most impressive example of urban renewal you've seen? Denver has done a fantastic job. Twenty-five years ago it wasn't so nice. Coors Field, the Pepsi Center and the Broncos' stadium really helped revitalize it.
Have you seen some impressive renewal here in town? I think they're doing a lot of good work downtown, and I'd like to see continued investment and redevelopment.
Kristin Lee of the central area is a small-business owner.
Describe one area of town that could use a makeover. The area between downtown and OCC isn't very nice, and the area between OCC and Manitou Springs is not quite living up to its potential, either.
What would you like to see happen there? It would be great if there was a trolley that ran from downtown, through OCC, to Manitou and back again, especially if that whole stretch was really nice with locally owned businesses.
Is there anywhere in Colorado Springs that you feel unsafe? Mostly the southeast area, and sometimes even downtown.
What's the most impressive example of urban renewal you've seen? My favorite city is Portland, Oregon. I've seen so many things there that I wish we could have here. Recycling is everywhere, there's good public transportation, and I saw a whole city block of gardens.
