Pot keeps picking up support, and Springs MMJ goes national

Though he acknowledges there may be some medical benefits to marijuana, Focus on the Family CEO Jim Daly explained in a recent blog post the "serious concerns" he has with the onset of legal recreational-marijuana consumption, including a "decrease in motivation." He followed that up, in a Jan. 16 interview with KRDO-TV, by comparing cannabis to heroin and prostitution, and offering this prediction: "I think five, ten years from now we're going to look back on this and say maybe that wasn't such a wise idea, and we're going to rescind those laws."

Personally, I'm not so sure that's going to happen. As the Denver Post has noted, four major polls in nine months have found historic levels of warmth toward marijuana. The first, in April of last year from the Pew Research Center, found 52 percent of respondents backed cannabis, "the first time in more than four decades of polling on the issue [that] a majority of Americans favor legalizing the use of marijuana." By the time CNN released a similar poll on Jan. 6, that number had risen to 55 percent.

But for this issue of ReLeaf, we'll eschew the culture wars for nuts-and-bolts issues. We'll tell you how seed-to-sale tracking is working out; how trustworthy strain information really is; and whether getting, or keeping, a red card is the best way to go. Also, we'll invite you to find a cohesive online compilation of all of the above, plus the rest of the Independent's ongoing marijuana coverage, at the brand-new indyweed.com.
