Plenty of requisite hobnobbing and hand-clapping went down Monday night at the Fine Arts Center during the 5th annual PAPAAs, or Peak Area Performances and Artists Awards, dashingly coordinated by the Pikes Peak Arts Council. Metal quartet Malakai bested Audio Broadcast and Porcelain Hand Jive in the Popular Music Group Category, while acoustic guitarist/vocalist Ohmy! (aka Michael Scott Parker) won out over Distrakt (Omar Jones) and Me & Julio (Julio Garcia and John Stone) for the Popular Music Solo/Duo distinction. The three nominees in each category were chosen by committees of judges who spent months seeking them out at local venues and discriminatingly listening to their albums, says the Indy's resident judge, Sara Gallagher.
Hope you got your Social Distortion (socialdistortion.com) tickets early, because all four shows at the Gothic Theatre in Englewood are sold out. Tickets for the Nov. 3-6 shows, nearly more coveted than those damn Wonka Golden Tickets, sold out in under a week. After 26 years and a few lineup changes, the quartet still stars hyper-tattooed poster boy Mike Ness on guitar and vocals. Regular Social D bassist John Maurer opted not to tour, so Rancid's Matt Freeman has been wrangled to fill in. The legendary D are touring on last year's Sex, Love and Rock 'n Roll, their first album in eight years.
Cult favorite Brian Jonestown Massacre lost their tour van, U-Haul trailer and all their equipment in New York City. It disappeared before their scheduled show at the Bowery Ballroom in New York on Sunday, Sept. 18. BJM publicity gal Betsy Palmer was unable to confirm whether the van and trailer were stolen or towed, though she admits theft "sounds possible." The band also was unable to play their Sept. 19 show at Ottobar in Baltimore, and their future plans are uncertain.
