Can you believe it's only one week until Xmas?! Man alive! Thanks to the "not-so-great depression," I, like a lot of people, have finished all my shopping early ... 'cause I am broke! Seriously, there are only seven more "whittling" days until Christmas, so you best get a move on!

Back to save Ye Olde Christ Mass, once again, are the Mansfields with their annual "Nightmare Before Christmas" power/pop/punk-stravaganza! Fresh from their third European invasion, the first since nabbing a slot on the Gearhead Records roster, the Mansfields will head this year's Festivus, Saturday, Dec. 20, at ye Black Sheep. If you go, you'll also get libations and vibrations from the Nica-Teens and the Evilettes.

Helping make this holiday season a little brighter for those less fortunate are the kind folks at Kinfolks, who will hold a benefit for the Empty Stocking Fund on Saturday, Dec. 20. Grass It Up, the Genuwines and Mike Clark (of Jack Trades fame) will be pickin' on some tunes, both modern and old-timey, and the $10 cover and all proceeds from the bar will help fill the Empty Stocking. Drink up, it's for charity!

And why not keep the giving spirit going on Sunday, Dec. 21, at Shuga's (702 S. Cascade Ave.) with Loverleigh, Changing Colors and Edith Makes a Paperchain. At this point, "some details are still a bit murky," but according to my favorite inside source, "entry fee options are: wrapped toy to be donated to Christmas Unlimited, nonperishable food items to be donated to Care and Share, or $3 at the door to be split between the two."

The Triple Nickel Tavern celebrates its third anniversary with Hussy, the Nicotine Fits and Severs on Thursday, Dec. 18, and Drag the River, Underminer (ex-Descendents) and Mike Stephens & the Foxhole Prayers on Friday, Dec. 19. Good job, guys keep on truckin', whatever that means!

I realize this isn't exactly "music scene" news (yet), but I went to the grand opening for the Memorial Park Skate Park (coincidentally built very near the lab site of brilliant "mad scientist" Nikola Tesla), and I cannot stress enough the positive impact this will have on our city's booming "livability" factor. Everyone involved in the project should be commended. I especially want to recognize the Colorado Springs Skatepark Friends, whose tireless advocacy created the momentum necessary to accomplish this most unlikely feat. There was every reason to think this project would have been muddled, and they pulled it off with precision.

And let me be the first to suggest, ahem, that this would be a fine location for some seriously awesome summer music festivals. Warped Tour? Ozzfest? SExNW? Leechapalooza? Anywho, go check out the skate park (northeast corner of Memorial), and visit myspace.com/cs_skatepark to see how you can get involved.

Oh, one more thing. Kimya Dawson (yes, the girl from the Juno soundtrack) will play at Smokebrush (218 W. Colorado Ave.) on Sunday, Dec. 21. First, from 3 to 5 p.m., she'll play a kid-friendly set from her kids' album, Alphabutt. At 7, she'll be joined by Akida Junglefoot Dawson and Sarah Hope for a set geared more toward the "big kids." Both are free for KRCC members, but non-member adults have to throw down $10 at the door.

Merry Xmas. Ho ho. Smell ya later.
