How did 2013 stack up for Colorado Springs? Very good. I'm from [Washington] D.C., and in comparison, Colorado Springs is mellow and beautiful, the people generally friendly.
What's the most important local story for 2013? The floods in Manitou. The fires in Waldo Canyon and Black Forest.
How about nationally? The trouble Obamacare is having. It's too bad because, given the chance, it could end up really helping some people.
Name something that changed for the better for you in 2013. I got engaged, and my fiancée is a shining star.
What would you delete from 2013 if you could? I had a battle with cancer.
On a scale of one to 10, what's your level of optimism going into 2014? I'm a glass half-full kind of guy, so I'm a 10.

On a scale of one to 10, how would you rate 2013 for Colorado Springs? This is a great place, but it's kind of stagnant. I give 2013 in Colorado Springs a 5.
What's something you learned about yourself in 2013? That I want to live where there's not a lot of people.
Name a personal change for the better in 2013. I learned a really important lesson: Don't argue with cops.
What's the most important news story of 2013? All the shootings and violence we keep seeing on the news.
On a scale of one to 10, how optimistic are you going into 2014? I'm a 10. I'm alive and well, and God's spirit is within me.

Rate 2013 for Colorado Springs. I have a sticker on my refrigerator that says, "Keep Colorado Springs lame." In that sense, 2013 was a pretty good year for Colorado Springs.
Name the most important local story in 2013. One I heard from a patient today about local support for the Head Start program.
How about nationally? The death and legacy of Nelson Mandela.
How did you change for the better in 2013? I got married.
If you could, what would you delete from 2013? Maybe not delete, but I'd reduce our individual and collective egos.
How optimistic are you about 2014? Very. I've realized that what happens around us is less important than our perspective.
